A Potluck and Community Gathering Open to BIPOC, Featuring Filipino Breakfast by Prairie Asian Organizers (PAO!)
Fruit cocktail, white flour, luncheon meat, condensed milk, and so many more. We’ve grown up with these familiar items, but have you ever wondered how they became ubiquitous to so many cultures across the globe? Prairie Asian Organizers (PAO!) invites you to have a seat at our table as we dive into the history of these foods and chat with community members and speakers about the effects of colonialism on traditional diets.
Prairie Asian Organizers (PAO!) is a collective of prairie Asians resisting the “model minority myth” and honouring our responsibility to dismantle anti-blackness and anti-indigeneity within our own communities. We began as a response to the Justice for Black Lives Rally during the summer of 2020. Since then, we have been organizing workshops and events with the goal to build solidarity with fellow BIPOC communities. Special thanks to Architects at Play for donating space to host our event as well as Kultivation and UMIH for their support!
Registration is required. Attendees are asked to bring a dish that reflects their cultural background influenced by colonialism/colonization. PAO! will provide a Filipino breakfast. Speakers are invited to present on topics related to colonialism’s effects on traditional diets and current realities. Afterward, attendees will discuss and reflect in small groups on the presentations.
