OUR STORY

As second generation Filipinos, born and raised here in Manitoba, we grew up watching our parents struggle. Beginning in the 1960s, waves of Filipinos immigrated to a foreign land, leaving their homeland and their loved ones – all for a promise of a better life.

Struggles and Sacrafices

Although Manitoba delivered on the promise of a better life for them and their future families – sacrifices were made. A majority of our parents who left the Philippines with professional degrees and careers had to opt to leave their passions behind and settle for minimum-wage work in the garment, manufacturing and health care fields.

Thanks to the struggles and sacrifices made by our parents, our generation was gifted a new life.

Unlike our parents, we are able to pursue our deepest passions.
We are chefs, architects, CPAs, dancers, musicians, DJs, marketers, community investors, teachers, event-producers and storytellers.

Kultivation F.A.M.D. is our “thank you” to our parents who have sacrificed everything for us – so we, and the generations after us, can live out our dreams.

ABOUT
KULTIVATION F.A.M.D.

Kultivation F.A.M.D. is a three-day festival that will take attendees through an immersive journey and showcase the story of our next generation of Filipino culture and innovation in Manitoba. Held in August 21-27, 2023 in Winnipeg, the festival will infuse modern and traditional elements of our culture by focusing on four key elements.

01

FOOD

The festival will include food battles, and collaborations with Filipino restaurants and chefs showcasing their specialties and creative wonders with food. We are featuring a battle pancit, specialty Filipino pizzas, food trucks, a Filipino influenced Tiki Bar and a custom-made Halo Halo beer. We have Local Filipino Restaurants working together with a whole Lechon giveaway and even a lumpia eating contest.

02

ARTS

Filipino artists, such 4Two Designs – who contributed to the design team of MB150 branding, is leading the art movement here in our Province.

To showcase the qork of these trail blazers there will be Community painting and makers market. There is a Flower experience at masagana farms, story telling with the MFBC, as well as a book reading and drag show.

03

MUSIC

One thing is guaranteed – if you visit one of our homes, there is 101% chance there is a karaoke machine in our living room.

The universal language of music played a huge role in our upbringing. The festival will highlight the growing Filipino musicians and DJs who call Manitoba home, through entertainment and live performances and even a dj scratch session.

04

DANCE

Manitoba is home to several national award-winning Filipino dance groups and a vibrant dance community.

The festival will fuse traditional and modern Filipino dance performances, have Q&A panels and even ballroom dancing.

Kultivation Festival

Why?

We want to share our modern culture with all of Winnipeg. We aim for Kultivation to be a place where all Winnipeggers can come to learn about, collaborate with, and find inspiration from our community.

Kultivation Festival

How?

We’ll do this as a community – engaging as much people as we can, in and outside of the Filipino community.

We are at the very beginning of this grassroots movement.
Planning this festival is just one step.

We hope with this festival and district, we will change the landscape of our community and inspire our youth by highlighting all the trailblazers leading the way in our Filipino community.
